The Fir Tree

The Fir Tree

The fir tree sat waiting for us
In the Christmas tree lot.
It drank the water we gave it.
Bursting forth its forest scent
How birds would have loved
To sit and preen on its pretty branches
That we have gaily dressed
With multicolored ornaments.

Bright white lights in place of snow
Bursting with a festive glow.
Dangling icicles fastened like earrings
Reminders of nature’s winter wearings.

Such joy in a gentle quiet being
Whose silence marks the timeless magic

Of the holiday season.
